Born in Sulphur, Louisiana and raised in Haughton, he starred at Mississippi State before the Cowboys took him in the fourth round in 2016, and he has been their starting quarterback ever since. He grew up going to the Walk-On's in Bossier City, where he says his high school photo is probably still on the bathroom wall, and in 2021 took a 20 percent stake in four Texas Walk-On's, of which only The Colony store is still on the chain's list. His foundation sponsors the patio at South Dallas's nonprofit Ruthie's Cafe, and he calls fried boudin his number one food.
